U.Porto has 155 researchers among the best in the world
More than 20% of all Portuguese scientists featured in world ranking "World's Best Scientists 2025"
U.Porto once again stands out on the global scientific scene, with 155 researchers included in Research.com's World's Best Scientists 2025 ranking.This figure represents more than 20% of the 792 scientists from Portuguese institutions on the list.
U.Porto researchers, recognised for their excellence in areas such as Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Medicine, Psychology, among others, have more than 42,000 publications and almost 1.9 million citations, demonstrating the significant impact of their work on the international scientific community.
Chemistry, Biology and Ecology stand out
Chemistry is the most represented area, with 41 U.Porto scientists recognised. This is followed by Biology and Biochemistry (20), Ecology and Evolution (19), Engineering and Technology (16), Environmental Sciences (9) and Materials Science (9).
The remaining areas include Computer Science (7), Medicine (7), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (6), Animal and Veterinary Science (5), Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (4), Physics (3), Social Sciences and Humanities (4), Microbiology (4), Genetics (2), Neurosciences (3), Psychology (3), Agricultural Sciences (2), Molecular Biology (1) and Earth Sciences (1).
Scientific production in the spotlight
In total, U.Porto's 155 researchers have accumulated 42,076 publications - almost double the number in the previous edition of the ranking - with an average of around 270 publications per researcher. The total number of citations exceeds 1.88 million, with an average of over 12,000 citations per scientist.
The Research.com ranking evaluates researchers based on criteria such as the number of citations, the H-index and the volume of publications, measuring the relevance and influence of scientists in their respective areas of research.
Excellence recognised in several areas
In addition to the high number of outstanding researchers, U.Porto also has several scientists recognised in more than one area of specialisation, reinforcing the cross-cutting nature of the research carried out at the institution.
