Startup Porto and Flowco strengthen partnership in support of the circular economy
Startup Porto and Flowco have renewed their incubation partnership, strengthening their shared commitment to the circular economy and sustainable materials made from industrial waste
Flowco is a 100% Portuguese startup dedicated to the circular economy, specialising in transforming industrial waste such as tyres and footwear soles into sustainable materials and products. By combining materials research, product design, digital prototyping, and local production, the company develops visually distinctive solutions for architects, interior designers, brands, and industries seeking environmentally responsible alternatives.
Founded by four architects with a shared vision of turning waste into valuable resources, Flowco began as an idea submitted to a business competition. The project gained momentum eight years ago when the founders joined Porto Design Factory. According to Co-Founder António Vale, this incubation period was essential for transforming the concept into a viable business.
At the end of 2018, with the creation of Startup Porto, Flowco transitioned into this new incubation structure, benefiting from more targeted business development support. This included guidance in preparing a business plan for the INNOV-ID initiative promoted by Portugal Ventures, which resulted in a successful venture capital investment. This funding was instrumental in advancing Goma by Flowco, the company’s brand of ecological tiles, flooring and decorative panels made mainly from recycled footwear soles and other industrial waste.
The investment enabled Flowco to move towards in-house production, increasing its autonomy and growth capacity. Looking ahead, the company is developing projects with the footwear industry to support decarbonisation efforts and has identified the automotive sector as a strategic future target. The recent renewal of the incubation period with Startup Porto for another year further consolidates a partnership that continues to drive Flowco’s sustainable innovation and expansion.
