Porto attracts global technology with 5G excellence
Porto is among the best cities in Europe for 5G networks, an achievement that has firmly placed the city on the map of innovation and digital transformation

For the third consecutive year, Portugal was in the spotlight at MWC for the quality of its 5G networks.
The podium for the category of best quality of experience is shared by Portugal and Sweden, with the cities of Porto and Stockholm in first and second place respectively. "This distinction undoubtedly reflects the commitment of the operators who have invested in the sector, ensuring its dynamism and development. I would also highlight the role of the regulator in creating a regulatory context that takes into account not only the supply side but also the demand side,” said Sandra Maximiano, President of ANACOM.
Portugal stands out in the reliability of 5G networks and, along with Denmark, the country also leads the way in the 5G network availability category, with the cities of Porto and Copenhagen having technology registration rates of around 87%.
Porto, Lisbon, and Stockholm were also deemed to have the most consistent 5G speeds. Porto leads the ranking with speeds exceeding 800 Mbps in the 10% of the fastest sessions, positioning the city as an ideal environment for high-bandwidth applications, such as gaming and cloud-based services, which depend on low latency and high-speed Internet. In data experience and OTT (Over-the-top) services, Porto and Stockholm once again top the ranking.
For the IT sector in particular, the quality and availability of 5G networks in the city offer enormous potential. 5G technology facilitates advances in areas such as machine learning, data processing, and real-time analysis, allowing for faster data speeds and more reliable connections. This robust 5G infrastructure lays the foundations for new opportunities in the local technology sector, with benefits for startups, established companies, and potential investors.
