New Mercadona store anchors Heart of Porto business hub
Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona will open a new store in the Heart of Porto, expanding its presence in Portugal and creating new local jobs.
The Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has signed an agreement to open a new store within the Heart of Porto, a landmark €70 million project transforming the former La Vie shopping centre into a premium mixed-use hub. The development, led by Tikehau Capital and Quest Capital, marks a major step in the revitalisation of Porto’s central business district. The project benefited from the support of InvestPorto through its aftercare programme.
This initiative is set to redefine the concept of workspace and urban integration in Porto. It will feature approximately 30,000 square metres of offices, retail and leisure areas, including rooftop facilities, a bar, a multi-purpose hall, and over 400 parking spaces equipped with electric charging points. Once completed, it is expected to accommodate around 2,000 workplaces, further strengthening the city’s position as a dynamic economic hub.
For Mercadona, this new location reinforces its expansion strategy in Portugal. The Heart of Porto store will be Mercadona’s fifth in the city, following the upcoming opening of another branch in the Amial area later this month.
In 2024 alone, Mercadona invested €219 million in Portugal, generating €1.78 billion in sales and contributing €237 million in taxes through its Portuguese subsidiary, Irmãdona Supermercados. With over 7,000 jobs created in six years and its first positive net profit of €7 million reported in 2024, the retailer’s integration into the Heart of Porto underscores both its confidence in the local economy and the city’s growing attractiveness for sustainable, high-impact investment.
