The University of Porto has been recognised as one of the world’s leading research institutions in the 2025 edition of the ScholarGPS Rankings of Scholars and Institutions. Ranked 122nd globally and first in Portugal, the University stands out for the volume, impact and quality of its scientific output over the past five years, based on internationally recognised indicators such as publications, citations and h-index.

This strong performance places the University of Porto just outside the global top 100 among more than 55,000 institutions assessed worldwide. During the period analysed, its nearly 8,000 researchers produced over 35,000 scientific publications, which together accumulated more than 300,000 citations, reflecting the University’s growing influence on global science.

At disciplinary and subject level, the University achieved exceptional results, ranking second worldwide in Pharmaceutical Sciences and holding leading positions in areas such as Life Sciences, Engineering, Health and Medicine. It is also the world’s top institution in Pharmacy and ranks among the global top ten in Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biochemistry and several highly specialised research fields.

In addition to institutional success, individual excellence was also recognised. Five researchers from the University of Porto were included among the Highly Ranked Scholars, a distinction reserved for only the top 0.05% of scientists worldwide across all fields over the last five years, reinforcing the University’s position at the forefront of international scientific research.
