Quality of the talent, a business environment that is beneficial to Elementis' objectives and the existing infrastructure, were the reasons that led the company to choose the city of Porto.
Elementis, a company operating in the chemical sector, will
invest three million euros in the country's first global center of excellence
and research and development (R&D) laboratory, which will open in the first
half of 2024 in Porto. The company will create 100 jobs by the end of 2024 in this
space which will serve as a showcase for clients from all over Europe. They also have plans to invest six million euros a year in people,
facilities and laboratories.
The UK-based company, with operations all over the world,
has already opened 40 vacancies in Porto in the areas of human resources,
finance, information technology, legal, commercial, purchasing and research and
development. "The employees based in Porto will collaborate with Elementis
teams located in Europe and on the American continent, but some of the
functions will have a global scope," the company said in a statement.
The new centre in Porto will support both Elementis' business
segments - personal care and performance specialties - while also reinforcing
the current research and development capacity of the company's laboratories in
Asia and the Americas. The company operates in the personal care sector, namely
cosmetic actives and antiperspirants.
The reasons for choosing Porto were the quality of the talent
available, the business environment beneficial to Elementis' objectives and the
city's existing infrastructure. As well as the opportunity to collaborate with
the Portuguese Catholic University, through the Center for Biotechnology and
Fine Chemistry (CBQF) of the School of Biotechnology. The company also
identifies as an advantage, "Portugal's time zone, which is ideal for
meeting the needs of customers and the company's other locations on the
American continent and in Europe".
"Elementis Porto will have an open and inspiring space
for our employees and customers to collaborate on practical demonstrations,
presentations and training. We have ambitious plans to launch more than 50 new
products by 2026, and this new location will have a crucial role in realizing
those plans," said Paul Waterman, CEO of Elementis.
With around 1,300 employees in 23 locations around the
world, Elementis "creates high-value specialty additives that improve the
performance of customers' products". It provides solutions to customers in
a wide range of markets, including cosmetics, antiperspirants, decorative and
industrial coatings, automotive and ceramics.
