Brasília is about to start modernization work to reach the generations of the future
22 Nov 2021
Long gone are the days when people used to queue up to use the escalators in the former Brasília Shopping Center. The high concentration of stores in a single space was the greatest modernity the city was witnessing in 1976. There was no other in the Iberian Peninsula. It is to rescue this attractiveness that Brasília - now simply Brasília, with no anglicism - is getting ready for a deep remodelling and a new life beginning in 2022.
Everyone can get to know the project, which was designed by architect João Ferros, even before construction begins. Everything is in pictures, displayed on the second floor. With an investment of around 500 thousand euros, the major transformation will be made in the total remodelling of the common spaces, from the floor to the ceiling.
Part of the past, the metallic stairs in the center of the space will give way to a plaza where cultural events such as concerts or art shows will be held. Modernization brings technology and customers will be able to find digital directories with the stores, and there will be wireless internet throughout the space. A step has already been taken regarding the environmental impact, with the installation, this year, of photovoltaic panels.
"We want to give continuity to the street commerce inside, but with some comfort", explained Luís Pinho, Brasília's administrator, in an interview with Porto Canal, on the day the project was presented to the city, November 18th.
Certain that "we are inserted in an area in effervescence", as much in commerce, as in services and the demand for offices, Luís Pinho believes that "many investors will be willing to buy here, in the shopping center".
However, this is not the only focus of the new Brasilia, which also bets on the younger generations. "We want the younger generations to get to know Brasília, to come here, to set up their businesses here, because this is a very interesting area", said the administrator.
